Beware of scams asking for cash to "help" a loved one this holiday season. Don't fall for criminals asking you to claim a prize, help a child or grandchild who has been in an accident or is in jail, or gain your inheritance from a long, lost relative.
Unfortunately, these scams tend to target the elderly. Please take the time to speak with older relatives about common scams:
- Warrant for your arrest (or arrest of a loved one) and cash or gift cards to make it go away
- Relative is stranded overseas and has been arrested and needs bail money in the form of cash or gift cards
- Text message regarding an Amazon account order
- Text message with a link for USPS delivery failure
- Text message with a fine for failing to appear for jury duty
- Request for money for a boyfriend or girlfriend you met online who needs money for a medical procedure, or to come visit you
Remember, the Social Security Administration will not call you telling you there is a problem with your account. Beware of people impersonating a utility company warning of an imminent shutoff.
Many of these scams involve the victim going to the bank to withdraw large amounts of cash (sometimes with the intent to purchase gifts cards). Remember, neither can be recovered. The victim may even deposit the money using a Bitcoin Depot or by having the money picked up by a courier service -- or even by meeting someone in person.
Protect Yourself and Your Family:
- Educate family members, especially the elderly
- Do not answer phone number you do not know
- Ignore any threats -- do not respond or engage with the scammer
- Question any requests that ask you to act immediately or with a sense of urgency. This is a sign of a scam.
If you receive a message that makes you uncomfortable, or if you question its legitimacy, contact your bank or law enforcement.
